I was literally on Gourmet magazine's website this morning, looking up subscription services when I heard the shocking news that they were shutting down. What a damn shame.

Gourmet magazine, especially recently under the direction of Ruth Riechl, had focused not just on recipes and cooking techniques, but on the politics of food and the culture of dining. Indeed, some of the content could be a bit inaccessible at times but to the casual foodie it was still an important resource. Gourmet's photography, predominantly done by Romulo Yanes, was consistently beautiful and inspiring. Conde Nast has decided to keep Bon Appetit around with its spotlit, overdramatic, and many times unappetizing (all in my opinion, I will add) close ups of food. I hope that as they consolidate their food magazines together, the photography for the surviving publication becomes as graceful, well-composed, and lively as Gourmet's.
A toast to you, Gourmet!
