Canis lupus baileyi

Joel Sartore; Mexican Gray Wolf, population 392,
Wild Candid Center, Eureka, Missouri
[via: PDN]

National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore has released a book entitled RARE: Portraits of America's Endangered Species. He's been working on this project for decades, photographing animals and plants on the edge of extinction (and sadly some that have become extinct by the time of publication, like the very last Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit, who died in 2008.) See more of the series (and larger and better!) on PDN's site.
